	In the fight against elder abuse, the Estrie region is without a doubt one of Quebec’s most involved regions. It boasts prevention and public awareness components actively promoted by the local consultation committees and other partners mentioned on this site. As well, a number of tools have been created that today serve as valuable guides for not only those working with seniors but also for the victims of abuse themselves and their families. The Internet offers a wealth of additional information that could prove useful in countering elder abuse at any given time.

CSSS : Present in the Estrie region!

The mission of the Centres de santé et des services sociaux (CSSS) in the Estrie region is to improve the health and well-being of the entire population for which they are responsible through the :

• Co-ordination of all services required for this purpose
• General care and services
• Specialized care and services for the elderly
• Training, research and the sharing of knowledge.

The CSSSs in each MRC offer a variety of programs and services to meet the specific needs and characteristics of elderly people and other adults with certain disabilities or experiencing loss of autonomy. Be it for lodging, home care, outdoor clinics, day centre services, short-term hospitalization, the prevention of falls, rehabilitation or vaccination, your CSSS is there for you. Don’t hesitate to contact the one in your MRC!

Working hand-in-hand in the Estrie region!

A number of vital partners in the health, municipal and community networks, which complement the local resources already in place, and that contribute to the prevention and educational work carried out by the seven consultation committees in the regional MRCs. Some of these intervene directly when a case of abuse is reported and their presence is essential for the seniors affected.

Preventing and fighting elder abuse

Established in 1991, the AEIFA is a regional organization that has fine-tuned its mandate over the years, dedicating its efforts today exclusively to the problem of elder abuse. Working with other community organizations, the Association effectively serves the seven MRCs in the Estrie region thanks to the expertise of workers and their personalized approach.

Mission

• To offer seniors and those working with seniors in the Estrie region services and resources to prevent and fight elder abuse.

Activities

Information and public awareness

• Collecting and organizing up-to-date information on elder abuse.
• Educating seniors and the public on the phenomenon of abuse and disseminating information on resources available within the organization.

Training

• Offering quality training on abuse to current and future professional workers, volunteers with partner organizations, and staff in the health and social services network.

Interventionn

• Providing a place for abuse victims to be heard and supported, and accompanying them through various social steps and legal undertakings.

Association des Townshippers

Townshippers’ Association is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization incorporated in 1979 that represents different sectors of the English-speaking community in the Eastern Townships. The Association is led by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

Townshippers’ Association offers a broad range of services and initiatives for the English-speaking community in the Eastern Townships.

To promote the interests of the English-speaking community, strengthen its cultural identity, and encourage the full participation of the English-speaking population in the community at large.

Townshippers’ Association has a number of projects to benefit the quality of life of seniors:

The With Respect to Our Elders project celebrates the dynamism and wisdom of older people through:

• intergenerational activities
• shared learning experiences
• creative expression

The RESPECT project provides information and support about the issue of prevention of elder abuse, and participates in an integral way in the planning and realization of the activities of June 15.

Eastern Townships Partners for Health and Social Services

• Assesses health and social service needs for seniors.
• Offers outreach programs to meet with community members with reduced mobility.
• Participates in the Community Health Education Program (CHEP) which brings health and social information via distance learning to English speakers in QC.

Information and Referral Service

• Provides seniors with confidential information in English on a wide variety of subjects.
• Offers a comprehensive information database for and about the English-speaking community in the Eastern Townships.
• Offers a free legal information clinic from September to March.
• Offers a free tax clinic for low income individuals and families during the months of March and April.

Anonymous and confidential help linep line

Founded on October 22, 1974 by Caritas Estrie and a group of volunteers, Secours-Amitié Estrie was incorporated on December 18 that same year. The organization’s identity is an integral part of its name: the SECOURS (assistance) component is for anyone suffering from psychological distress while the AMITIÉ (friendship) component seeks to reach out to people living in isolation and who wish to be less isolated.

Mission

• To provide those living in the Estrie region with a telephone help line of a general nature that is anonymous, confidential and free. The organization’s mission is to welcome everyone and allow them to freely express their emotions.
• To offer a referral service, when needed, and call upon its partners when a life is at stake.

Fields of intervention

Secours-Amitié Estrie offers front-line services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone calling will feel understood and recognized as a person of value thanks to an empathetic and respectful ear. This service is provided by about 50 volunteer listeners aged 20 and over who are carefully selected, trained and supervised.

In abuse situations, expressing one’s feelings and describing one’s experiences often help the person see his or her situation clearer and he or she can then improve it or seek specific help. Help yourself – call us!

Preventing and fighting abuse in a context involving a cognitive illness

The Société Alzheimer de l’Estrie (SAE) was founded in 1985 by a group of nurses familiar with Alzheimer’s disease. Since then, the organization has developed a humanistic approach that prioritizes the person afflicted and his or her loved ones. Over the years, it has also become an active community partner that cooperates with its peers through home care meetings, participating on regional local consultation committees, monthly conferences, and information sharing and training for local stakeholders.

Mission

• To inform and raise public awareness of Alzheimer’s and its effects
• To accompany and support people with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones
• To encourage and support psychosocial and biomedical research on the disease.

What about abuse prevention?

The SAE addresses the issue of elder abuse in its support groups for natural caregivers and discussion and support groups for people with Alzheimer’s. The goal is to inform and raise awareness among people who could be closely or even remotely affected by this harsh reality. After exploring the topic, if specific questions or needs arise, workers remain available for individual meetings. Each person is heard, supported, and accompanied in complete confidentiality.
